Banff Squirrel

on Monday, August 17, 2009

What else could I be posting about if not about this now infamous Columbian Ground Squirrel? The story is that two British tourists visiting Lake Minnewanka in beautiful Banff national Park, Canada, wanted to take a photo of themselves with the lake and mountains in the background. They placed their camera on some rocks and set it to take the photo on timer.

However, attracted by the sound of the timer, this squirrel pops up just at the right time to crash the photo. The couple were so amused by this photo, they posted it on the National Geographic website and from there, the squirrel photo has made it round the world. In fact, the squirrel is now appearing in other photos too.

He is now a global celebrity. Way to go, brother.

VioletSky had this picture before it went viral. I should have known you'd be all over it. Squirrel City!

So do you suppose this new celebrity going to make nut martinis all the rage when he hits Hollywood for his first full length feature?

Trend setter squirrel.

Well, we know that on the the rim of the glass will be crushed acorns, right?

Maybe a basket of sunflower seeds on the side while you are waiting for your martini.

Shaken or stirred?

saw this when it first came out on the Nat Geo site - what a perfect photo. I'd make it my Christmas photo if I were that couple.

Is that shot for real? I don't think so, I don't think a squirrel would be in that area, near the water, right?

He is totally the most wonderful good will ambassador for squirrels. HE ROCKS! Let's be proud of him and hope he lives a good life and continues to pop up in vacation photos (though my guess is by now he has gotten an agent and is charging a fee)

Dr. John,
Sorry, but that would be like trying to keep the tide from coming in.

Lisa,
This photo was taken at Lake Minnewanka which is the largest lake in Banff National Park although Lake Louise is especially pretty. It is a real photo and not a fake although the now famous squirrel has been photoshopped onto many other photos since.

Hearts,
Thanks for thinking of me when you saw this. It's friends like you that keep me well informed.

geewits,
I missed it on VioletSky. I must go over to have a look. Thanks for letting me know though.

Mark,
The Celebrity Squirrel will be introducing his own new line of alcoholic beverages made from fermented nuts.

secret agent woman,
I agree that it would make a great Christmas Card.

squirrelmama,
I think his slightly unkempt fur and goofy face, makes him a great representative of the everyman squirrel!

btw, I have the news on now- and the Squirrel is being shown right now!! Wild!!

kat,
That is WILD! But what is the "Squirrelizer"? As for finding these materials, all I can say is that we have squirrels everywhere!

Janice,
indeed, only in Canada. i remember a case of someone robbing a donut shop by carrying a Canadian Goose and threatening to twist its neck. only in Canada.
