What has been the most bizarre thing that you have ever eaten? I am not terribly adventurous. I do like trying new foods and cooking styles but I do not stray far from common farm animals. I am a bit of a disgrace cause Chinese have a reputation of eating anything with legs except tables and chairs. Heck, Chinese even eat things with no legs whatsoever.
How do we know that Adam and Eve was not Chinese? Cause if they were Chinese, they would have eaten the serpent and not the apple. Haha. A little theologically inaccurate joke.
Asia is famous for its variety of fried insects, monkey brains, dog meat, snake hearts, sharks' fin, bear's paws etc. I am sure you know what I mean. If you don't, then you should watch the TV program "Bizarre Foods" and follow host Andrew Zimmern as he eats the most bizarre, frequently foul and often stomach churning food items from around the world.
As I said, I am quite wimpy about bizarre foods. However, I have eaten raw rat liver (accidentally), fish stomachs with herbs (perut ikan), bison meat and bird's nest soup (which is actually made from swallow's saliva), just to name a few. As a Malaysian, I am proud to have eaten the famously odious smelling king of fruits.......the durian, which interestingly is one of the very few foods that Andrew Zimmern will not eat.
Every now and then, some smart ass will come by and leave a comment on this blog about how squirrel is on the menu in some parts of the world. Mark, you know who you are! Sadly though, it is true. In a recent episode, I watched Andrew Zimmern explore the Appalachians, USA, and hungrily consume squirrel brains. Now that, to me, is so bizarre. How can anyone eat something so cute?

yick yick yick, i accidently tried reindeer meat once, then promptly threw it up xxx
Bear, deer, raccoon and sushi and octopus. Lunch meats
head cheese and blood sausage; plus limburger cheese and the one that grossed out my kid not too long ago was a canable sandwich (raw beef, slice of onion on rye bread.
Iek When my dad went on a holiday to China he lost a lot of weight.
He walked over a market where they sold every part and animal possible. Suddenly he didn't trust the food anymore.
I don't eat anything weird and I don't like to think about weird food at all. I don't even eat sushi, oysters or mushrooms which most people think of as regular food. I once accidentally ordered a whole lobster instead of just the lobster tail and was so grossed out I didn't eat lobster again for about a year. But, you know, to each his own.
Yummmmm Squirrel. Father Durfee always said "it is better to consume a squirrel and be a smart ass than eat a bizarre food and be a dumb ass" Besides why waste the meat when it takes so many pelts to make a good winter coat?
Sally,
Reindeer? Dasher? Dancer? Prancer? Vixen? :)
Joyce,
You are certainly more adventurous than me.....especially head cheese. Yuks!
Marja,
My uncle had a similar experience in China!
geewits,
you might be surprised but it is possible that something you eat may not appear weird to you but might be weird to others. Many Asians for example can't stand the smell of cheese.
Mark,
I am reporting you to PETA. They may throw you in jail but at least you get to meet all those beautiful protesters.
eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww!
ew ew ew....gamey.
That Andrew Z is one wild and crazy guy.
ha ha ha hahahahaha Never met a PETA protester I didn't throw paint on. I love squirrel...I mean I love you squirrel, it's all in good fun.
There is so much Great Cuisine I have yet to eat .... as a kid I was such a picky fussy eater- I am doing great now just trying out all the wonderful cuisine there is...
Last night we had a special that was served with a side of lentils (a special kind- no one in the kitchen knew how to spell the name so I could have it on record). I told a guest about it who said that she was no fan of lentils and I said You have to try this- I am not a fan either but these are great--- and I got a taste for her from the Chef... :-) she loved it and ordered the special!
Anything I normally would not like- in the hands of our kitchen: marvelous!
as far as game meats- I once had rabbit and that was pretty tasty
EEEWWWWW !!!!
Gina,
I take it that squirrels can keep their brains around you?
Mark,
I just hope to distract you from squirrel parts with pretty PETA parts.
kat,
I think world cuisine is part of exploring the world. I too had rabbit once by accident in paella. I really ought to have a better understanding of foreign language menus!
MSW,
Surely you've had some strange Caribbean cuisine?
