Classical Hamlet and Desperate Housewives

on Sunday, August 19, 2007

Thank you all for the great advice on how to widen my classical music appreciation. I will definately follow up on some of the suggestions. Eastcoastdweller suggested Bach's Air on G-string which immediately struck a chord in the jumble that is my mind. Unfortunately, this melody is for me forever associated with a series of clever ads for a cigar called Hamlet which I will now share with you through the magic of youtube. (Squirrel General's Health warning:- Smoking is bad for you. Do not start. If you've started, try to stop. You are nuts to keep smoking and not "nuts" in a nice way.)

The Lone Grey Squirrel disapproves of smoking cause it is bad for you. I also disapprove of scandalous shows like the "Desperate Housewives". I am sure it is entirely sensationalised to tittilate and seduce viewers but its portrayal of the problems of housewives is misleading and has nothing to do with reality. To balance things up, I offer the following snippets that show a more realistic presentation about the lives of housewives.

This is good advice to common problems faced by housewives.

I loved the advice column Lgs...too funny. I agree with you about Desparate Housewives...the previews were enough to make me turn off the TV which is off most the time anyway.

'You are nuts to keep smoking and not "nuts" in a nice way.)' - good one Lgs!

I tried watching an episode of Desperate Housewives once. I barely made it through 10 minutes. It's just not that interesting, to me anyway.

janice,
I was hysterical when I first read that advice column. I guess that is what is called "dodging the issue". Haha. I have watched in collective total about 20 minutes of the show largely because it was on in a friends house and I really think it is terrible.

thethinker,
Well, I think you are a very mature and discerning young lady as evident on your blog. Unfortunately, I think too many young people are taken in by this rot. Recently I found a bunch of 12 year olds watching an entire season on their iPod and the parents are completely oblivious.

Those Hamlet commercials were interesting. I wonder if George Lucas sued them over the robot one. I had some more to say, but I'm going to go smoke a cigarette.

I'm nuts, but not in a nice way. ;)

LOL - obviously, Miriam is a guy! :-D

I love the juxtaposition of the Disney Housewives, the Miriam column and the cigar ads. It's like three poles to a planet. Thanks for sharing a bit of your world.

I think most television is frightening. We haven't had one in five or six years. We do watch some programs via Netflix - but those that we like and choose.

The problem is that programs like Desperate Housewives make so much money that the entire market shifts in that direction. Very sad.

geewits,
Beer! Now that's a vice I can join you in! Beer goes well with nuts!

Evalinn,
Miriam's a guy? Do you really think so? ;)

claudia,
I applaud you for getting rid of TV. As much as I may rant about its content, I am still under its control.

Hey there is good tv! What about Discover, Animal Planet and the History channel. Let's not forget Law & Order: CI, starring the thinking woman's sex god, Vincent D'onofrio.
LGS, you are so right about that other stuff. I especially loved the advice column.
Sometime will you post (if you haven't already) about the natural world you see around you in your country, particularly common animals in your locale?

Are there even grey squirrels in Malaysia? It's only august and the ones around here are stocking up at the feeders. Maybe they know something I don't about the coming seasons.

Classical Music advice....

do you have favorite movies? which used classical music (whether by the old masters or modern composers) in their soundtrack?

I would start with those.... and then just dabble about.

When you are ready for classical meets rock...well you know to whom I will send you to: EVOC.

Yes, but how does Lone Grey Squirrel feel about the Grey's Anatomy spinoff, Private Practice? At least in that case, the new show came from something "Grey" like yourself.

Funny! Maybe there are many husbands out there who could use a new carburetor or something.

You're right about the Disney housewives. Now they have some real problems.

Did you hear that there's going to be a new show this coming season about 4 men - essentially a male version of Desperate Housewives. That should REALLY be something!

*sigh* no point in making the comment I made

hahah - good laugh. Love the letter of the day & disney's desperate housewives. I never watched the DH sitcom. But then, I don't watch tv much anyways. Too much crap on there these days.

Claire,
Sure there's good TV but it seems to be in the minority nowadays. I seldom watch TV now so I am unfamiliar with Law and Order CI but you are not the first woman to mention Vincent D'onofrio. ('fraid I have no idea who that is but clearly he seems to get the ladies hot and bothered).

There are no grey squirrels here but we do have tree shrews and giant squirrels. For some posts on the flora, fauna and culture of Malaysia, follow my tags for animals or for Malaysia.

kat,
I am more ready for classical meets rock than I am for classical. I shall check your posts on EVOC.

lucy,
Thanks for leaving a comment. An honor to have a visit from a comedienne. My wife loves Grey Anatomy but I sadly have watched neither that nor Private Practice. So I can't comment. My wife assures me it is superior to DH though.

Hearts,
If only we can fix relationship problems as easy as fixing a carburetor! As for DH (Disney Housewives), I'd watch that.

leslie,
Sorry. Not into a tittilating show about 4 guys but ladies, please enjoy.

Mark,
Your sigh is so loud! :)

becky,
"But then, I don't watch tv much anyways." You have the advantage of the distraction of so much natural beauty where you live.

What a great answer to the woman with the transvestite husband! I'm going to change my approach in therapy now.
