Tired of Fighting

on Tuesday, November 27, 2007

Why is there conflict in the world? I don't just mean wars but conflicts almost everywhere we turn in daily life. Conflict in the family, conflict between neighbours, conflict at school or confict at work. Most of us do not seek conflict but yet it is difficult to avoid. I want to enjoy my life. Conflict is a waste of time when life is so short. The little poem above expresses how I feel perfectly.

In any population, a certain percentage of the people are assholes. Fortunately it's a small percentage, but you can't avoid the fact that the assholes will always be there. It's the assholes that cause the problems. Unfortunately there's no way of rounding them all up and putting them all in the same place so they could only bother each other - that would make it pretty lousy for them but absolutely great for the rest of us.

I so agree with you. Not that I have never been involved in any conflict, but I vastly prefer the way of peace. And you just have to love Shel Silverstein.

Perfect Lgs and I too agree. It's awful to think people are in such a bad place that conflict seems their only resolution. That poem says a lot.

Hey Squirrelly - I know exactly how you feel. The problem is that it's actually not factual. The world has a lot less conflict than it ever has and we are truly moving into an era of diplomacy. Here's a cool video from the Ted Conference on this topic: http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/163 I heard Colin Powell say almost the same thing this Steve Pinkler says here.

I'm sorry you aren't feeling well.

I totally agree, LGS.

Maybe I'm a hopeless optimist, but I think it's getting better, a little bit at a time. Just look at us! Here we all are, talking and chatting from different corners of the world, different perspectives and different opinions, and for the most part, it's happening harmoniously.

*hugs*

Be well! Don't let them grind you down! Keep reading Shel Silverstein, and everything will be okay! :)

Gosh, I sure hope you find Juliet. Wouldn't that be awesome? I sometimes think of old friends and wonder what they're up to but haven't reconnected with any. I might just look some of them up.

Sorry you're feeling down. Only way now is up! :D

baba,
I just wonder if they don't realise they are wasting their lives in conflict too.

cs,
Shel Silverstein is a relatively new discovery for me.

janice,
Some of them remind me of playground bullies that never grew up.

claudia,
Less conflict? I don't know. I guess it depends on how you measure it and your perspective. But globally, I have to think about Congo, Darfur, Uganda, Burma, Somalia, Tamil Tigers, Al Qaeda etc. Even in Malaysia we just had a big clash between police and protesters with more than 170 arrested. Maybe there are less wars as most of this are internal civil unrests or maybe there is less land area at conflict but there are still too many people caught in conflict.

Thanks for trying to be positive and being the sun in my raincloud! :)

meggie,
Thanks.

mago,
sorry, I followed the link but am not sure what you are referring to.

kimber,
Thanks. You and claudia are such positive powers. We need people like you.

ruth,
I'm sorry. I guess you know what I am talking about especially at work. Here's to things getting better because we can make it better.

leslie,
Finding Juliet would be a big up! ;)

oh what a beautiful picture and how much i agree How much easier would life be if we were more tolerant of each other and more loving and forgiving. Sent you hugs from NZ

Okay, so who was yanking on our dear LGS today?

Do we need to fly over there and have a talk with him/her?

(whoops, I guess that would be more conflict)

marja,
Thanks for your kind words.

jocelyn,
actually nothing new. I manage an office of 30 people. Realising that we spend a significant portion of our lives at work, I try to give everyone a conducive and fun environment to work in. Yet lately, I've been feeling that work is not an inviting place because of all the politics and petty fighting that takes place irregardless. I cannot stress enough that it is petty disputes and the efforts of small emperors trying to build their empires at the expense of others.

Awh sorry LGS - I tried it now and got the reply that the picture is deleted.
It was - of course - the picture of a squirrel, peeking around a tree. Handsome fellow. Thought it would give a little cheer.

i so agree with you LGS. life really is short; one never knows how long they'll be here on earth. so why not enjoy life and one another, but with so many personalities and each person having their own personal share of problems/conflicts, i guess conflict is inevitable.

I couldn't say it any better than baba doodlius.
My poor hubby is in Palm Springs this week in the middle of a giant conflict which basically is nothing more than an overblown pissing contest.

You are difinitely not a bear for punishment.

mago,
thanks. May you have good cheer this week too.

sylvia,
I guess we all realise that conflict is part of life but perhaps that is so because we behave more like children than we'd all like to think. i think you know what I mean.

Lone Grey Squirrel said...

top cat,
If only. sigh.

molly,
As I mentioned above, I have only recently discovered this gentleman Shel Silverstein. I look forward to reading more.

Lone Grey Squirrel said...

claire,
My sympathies for your husband. I will be in a similar situation soon for three days but instead of an open pissing competition it will be more of a "watch your back or you might get pissed upon" type event.

ivan,
sometimes, peace comes quicker if you fight until there's a winner. A long smouldering truce can cause more hurt, pain and prolong the unrest.

Awww...Can I "borrow" that poem...i may have to use it some day soon!
I so agree with you....it would be nice wouldn't it...if we all could just let people be who they are.
Peace

odat,
Sure you can "borrow" the poem. Wish I remembered where I "borrowed" it from.
