Why is there conflict in the world? I don't just mean wars but conflicts almost everywhere we turn in daily life. Conflict in the family, conflict between neighbours, conflict at school or confict at work. Most of us do not seek conflict but yet it is difficult to avoid. I want to enjoy my life. Conflict is a waste of time when life is so short. The little poem above expresses how I feel perfectly.

In any population, a certain percentage of the people are assholes. Fortunately it's a small percentage, but you can't avoid the fact that the assholes will always be there. It's the assholes that cause the problems. Unfortunately there's no way of rounding them all up and putting them all in the same place so they could only bother each other - that would make it pretty lousy for them but absolutely great for the rest of us.
I so agree with you. Not that I have never been involved in any conflict, but I vastly prefer the way of peace. And you just have to love Shel Silverstein.
Perfect Lgs and I too agree. It's awful to think people are in such a bad place that conflict seems their only resolution.That poem says a lot.
Hey Squirrelly - I know exactly how you feel. The problem is that it's actually not factual. The world has a lot less conflict than it ever has and we are truly moving into an era of diplomacy. Maybe I'm a hopeless optimist, but I think it's getting better, a little bit at a time. Just look at us! Here we all are, talking and chatting from different corners of the world, different perspectives and different opinions, and for the most part, it's happening harmoniously.

Less conflict? I don't know. I guess it depends on how you measure it and your perspective. But globally, I have to think about Congo, Darfur, Uganda, Burma, Somalia, Tamil Tigers, Al Qaeda etc. Even in Malaysia we just had a big clash between police and protesters with more than 170 arrested. Maybe there are less wars as most of this are internal civil unrests or maybe there is less land area at conflict but there are still too many people caught in conflict.

actually nothing new. I manage an office of 30 people. Realising that we spend a significant portion of our lives at work, I try to give everyone a conducive and fun environment to work in. Yet lately, I've been feeling that work is not an inviting place because of all the politics and petty fighting that takes place irregardless. I cannot stress enough that it is petty disputes and the efforts of small emperors trying to build their empires at the expense of others.

It was - of course - the picture of a squirrel, peeking around a tree. Handsome fellow. Thought it would give a little cheer.
i so agree with you LGS. life really is short; one never knows how long they'll be here on earth. so why not enjoy life and one another, but with so many personalities and each person having their own personal share of problems/conflicts, i guess conflict is inevitable.

My sympathies for your husband. I will be in a similar situation soon for three days but instead of an open pissing competition it will be more of a "watch your back or you might get pissed upon" type event.

sometimes, peace comes quicker if you fight until there's a winner. A long smouldering truce can cause more hurt, pain and prolong the unrest.
