The Bear Problem

on Saturday, June 30, 2007

Global warming means extreme weather throughout the world. Hundreds die in floods in Pakistan while at the same time hundreds also die of heat wave in Eastern Europe and Greece. Meanwhile floods also hit England and Oklahoma. Manitoba gets hit by multiple tornadoes on two consecutive days. This was all in the last week.

Even before this, it was noted that the sea ice in Northern Canada was forming later in the year and there was less of it. This is severely impacting the polar bears that rely on the ice to go out to sea to hunt for seals. The lack of sea ice has led to reports for the first time of large numbers of malnourished polar bears, reports of bears eating their own cubs and even for the very first time, reports of bears drowning because there was too much sea between ice packs.

Some fear that this could be a serious threat to the polar bears and could lead to their extinction. The few optimists that remain think that nature will learn to adapt.

For polar bears, adaptation may mean finding alternative food sources or moving to where the food is and as bears of all sorts begin to move southwards, this invariably could lead to more human animal clashes. As a service to those in potentially affected areas like the USA and Canada, I have included the following advice on safety from the Alaskan Deparment of Fish and Game. For all our sakes, please read it carefully to the very last line.

LOL That notice is excellent.

I read your comment over at Josie's and liked it so much that I thought I would stop in and say Hi!

Hi!

I thank you for the enlightenment... I don't feel though, that I shall get close enough to bear dung to see if it smells like pepper... ha ha.

LGS, you're a hoot. I love your sense of humor... :-)

I just read your post on satay as well, and you know satay is my absolutely favorite food. I love peanut sauce. Hmmmm, now I know what I will have for lunch.

Cheers, and have a great weekend.

Josie

hehehe - aside from the seriousness of all the effects of global warming & other lashes from mother nature, both images are FUNNY. Love the polar bear one especially!!!

Oddly enough, we're having an unusually WET June - I can only be thankful for it. In May we were already in the upper 30s & feared that summer was hear to stay. June has been a beautiful reprieve!

Well if it's a polar bear, then that great little noisy bell your wearing becomes a "dinner bell".

Polar Bears and Juvenile Grizzly Bears have no qualms about eating humans. Other bears are less likely to unless they feel extremely threatened or starving. Otherwise large prey like us looks like to big of a risk for getting injured.

Interesting post LG, we have to smarten up!

I feel sad for the Polar Bears.
And I empathise with them- they are all left handed & if they have to come down into our world how will they fare??
I am left handed though, & I do really well, so they can count on me for support!!

Too good Lgs! ...and how appropriate the last line for really we are the ones encroaching on their territory.
I must admit I won't be getting close enough to check out if there are any bells in the dung LOL

Curchhill, Canada is known for its Polar Bears and offers tourists sightseeing tours during the period when the bears are massing....

In the Fall at Halloween, there are two costumes you want to avoid wearing...
that of a SEAL and
that of a POLAR BEAR

Q: What do you get when you cross a polar bear with a seal?
A: A polar bear.

I should proof my typing....Churchill, Canada

HEY!! Those bears will eat my hives.

On other notes, I do think it's very sad that we are seeing the end of some magnificent creatures - including polar bears and... bees.

Squirrel fur in the dung...I have a feeling reading that made you shiver about as much as I shivered when I read the little comic strip and realized I was now in consideration of becoming bear food! Thanks for the warning, I must go buy some bells for my toes.

"Squirrel fur???" Sounds to me like YOU might be on the endangered species list soon, if those bears get hungry enough! Meanwhile I'm busily sewing bells on all my t-shirts......

That was funny. The bells part I mean. I hope the polar bears do not become extinct. If something is to become extinct, I want it to be alligators and crocodiles. They scare the crap out of me.

Funny sign and great cartoon. So is all our rain here in Oklahoma got anything to do with Global Warming?

We've just camped in Yellowstone Park--great grizzly territory--and I, for once, was nervous to go on a trail run (had no bells along). My husband clapped his hands as he ran, even.

Whoops, hit "publish" too soon.

So anyhow, some grizzlies may also have a few clapping hands in their scat!

Hi there Patricia,
welcome to my humble blog. Watch out for polar bears and rabid quirrels. Don't be a stranger.

tsduff,
smart. Of course, crows are supposed to be very smart.

josie,
Thank you. Satay does seem to have become an international food. Have a great weekend.

becky,
it is serious. The flooding in Pakistan is devastating. I also am very concerned about polar bears. They have such a wonderful appearance. Too bad they are definately under threat.

proxima,
If the polar and grizzly bears do attack humans, "do not feed the animals" would have a dufferent meaning. It would mean, "run and throw that bell away."

lorraine,
some of these global warming effects are already established and will not go away even if we reduce carbon emissions tomorrow. But we must act to prevent even worse consequences.

meggie,
Left handed? Really? I didn't know that!

janice,
If you're near bear dung, YOU are too CLOSE! LoL.

kat,
Very witty. yes avoid those costumes this Halloween. What do you get when you cross the Atlantic with the Titanic? ..........half-way.

claudia,
any new development on the bee situation. Any light at the end of the tunnel?

ellie,
You are absolutely right, I'm not thrilled about squirrel fur in bear dung.

molly,
be awhile before bears reach Florida.

geewits,
alligators and crcocs seemed to have survived the last ice age.

squirrel,
hard to tell specifically but when you put everything together, there is clearly an effect of Climate Change.

jocelyn,
I'd be shocked if the hands were still clapping.

I heard that notice as a told joke. But it is a serious and sad problem. Bears eating their cubs - what is this world coming to?
